On October 30, 2012 seven Lowry students went to Rocky Mountain PBS to tape Super School News. You can watch the efforts of Isabel Alire, Reed Beecher, Anayia Edwards, Graham Foltz, Ruth Ortiz, Max Smith and Sarah Wood beginning Tuesday, 11/13/12, through the following Saturday. The airing days and approximate times for the week are:

Lowry’s Got Talent

Do you have a child who can juggle, do magic tricks, sing, jump rope, play an instrument? Then why not have him/her audition for the Lowry Talent Show? We also need student announcers, stage crew, and script writers for the Talent Show.

Auditions will be during lunch the week of October 1. Students interested in auditioning should come to the auditorium during recess on their assigned days. They will be given a pass for the audition.

The Lowry Talent Show will be limited to 20 acts. Acts will be judged on originality, creativity, talent, and preparedness. All acts must be G rated and appropriate for an audience of ECE-fifth graders. All acts must be 2 minutes or less. Absolutely no lip-synching will be considered.

Unfortunately, not everyone who auditions will be asked to be in the Talent Show. We are really proud of everyone who auditions because that takes a lot of courage but it takes more than courage to be selected. Only those acts that demonstrate they are polished, creative, entertaining and unique through their audition will be chosen. All students who audition will get a letter to tell them if they made the show or not.

If a child is chosen for the Talent Show s/he must be able to make the rehearsal on October 29 at 3:00. The Talent Show will be Wednesday, October 31 at 9:15 and 1:15.

Spelling – Third Grade

Third graders invited to participate in GT Spelling.  This is an independent study program where you learn spelling words on-line using www.spellingcity.com and is in addition to your regular spelling work. Each month we will have a spelling bee in the style of the DPS spelling bees www.dpssemantics.com

Students will need a user name and password to access Spelling City and take on-line spelling tests.  Return the bottom portion of this note to me to get your user name and password. If you would like to take a peek at the words, go to Spelling City and click on the “Students” button. Toward the bottom of this page, click on the “Find your list” link. Type in “spampinato” and click “Search.” You will use lists 3 A, 3 B, 3 C, … 3 X. There are practice tests and lots of games to do without the password/user name. Once you have your user name and password, you’ll be able to access even more games and take your spelling tests on line.

I am using the Scripps National Spelling Bee Grade Level Study Words for grades 3-9. The words will be divided up as follows for our monthly spelling bees:

NOMINATIONS FOR 2013-2014 HIGHLY GIFTED PROGRAM ARE DUE OCTOBER 1, 2012.  Nominations are available at Lowry and are posted at gt.dpsk12.org

Spell It – Grades 4/5

Fourth and fifth graders are invited to participate in Spell It, an exciting and advanced spelling program. We will meet, usually, on Mondays and Fridays at 7:45 in the library. On Mondays students will get their words for the week and on Fridays they will take your test.

As part of Spell It we will take part in the DPS Spelling Bees. We can take the top ten spellers to each competition. The first is on December 13 and the second on January 31. We will also take our top 10 spellers to the City Written Bee on February 13. More information about the city and state bees is available at http://www.dpssemantics.com

All of the word lists are available for study at www.spellingcity.com

Click on “Find a List,” type Spampinato into the search space and click on my name. The Spell It lists will be titled Spell It 1, Spell It 2, and so on. There are lots of really fun games to play on line; it is a great way to study the words.

Interested students should come to the library on Monday, September 10 at 7:45.
